According to the Figures Issued as Part of Rail Regulator Schienen Control’s Annual Report, FREIGHT and Passenger Traffic on Austria’s Rail Network Reached Record Levels Last Year

According to Gerald Klug, Minister of Transport and Maria Theresia Röhsler, the Managing Director of Schienen-Control released the fourth IRG market report in Vienna. The overall performance of the Austrian railway is increased and in this respect the freight volume increased from 111.1 million tons to 113.3 million tons and the freight performance increased 21.2 to 22.5 billion tons –km.

 Austria Railway a High Ranked Freight and Passenger Transport Network

According to a statement of Managing Director Schienen-Control given the size of Austria, this is a high figure, which underlines the importance of rail cargo transport in this country and transport minister further added that Austria railway constantly promote single wagon load traffic and combined transport to facilitate access to rail transport for companies. Austria railway is operating total 73 trains, including 53 passengers and 20 for the transportation of the freight per day. It is a good figure as compared to the other European countries.

Overall, the member countries of the IRG-Rail are using 80 percent trains for the passengers and 20 percent of the freight transportation. According to the figures Austria is the highest ranked country in this segment as compared to the Europeans.

In Austria the average price for the an infrastructure operator is 3 cents per freight kilometre which is more than European average which is 2.7 cents per freight kilometre. Passenger trains show different figures as compared to the freight trains. The passenger transport average price is 2.3 cents which is less than the average of 4.3 cents.
